125 photographs-128 pages

In photos and narrative, WHAT WE HOLD DEAR resumes the story begun in BEFORE THE SILENCE.  From the late 1880s, to the present, Alderville’s history is written from the point of view of fictional characters.

Two women figure prominently: aged but spry Kathleen Franklin, or Gate-gan as she is called, and Katie Chase, her great-granddaughter, narrate the story. Going through the contents  of a trunk that Kathleen has filled with her treasured memorabilia including  photos, newspaper clippings, university papers and recipes, the two women share their stories and lore.  These threads weave a rich textured history of Alderville’s  past and recent history.

Although Gate-gan and Katie are fictional characters, all that they discuss throughout the book is factual.

Members of Alderville First Nation share the by-line on this book, having written chapters or provided information or photos. For example, in 1953 Mary Jane Muskratte Simpson completed a manuscript: “Life on the Lake”, from which chapters have been excerpted. Recollections from elders  are enhanced with photos and embroidered upon with Gate-gan and Katie’s commentary. In the book you will see paddleboat steamers, riverboats, marathon runners, construction of the landmark war memorial monument, wild rice gathering and much, much more.  WHAT WE HOLD DEAR will rekindle some remarkable memories of times recently passed.
